Beneath the Bowery Ballroom balcony, fans anticipated English singer-songwriter Griff to begin her North American tour in New York City. In the front row, a group of friends in their 20-somethings enthused animatedly about their favorite Griff song, the number of concerts they'd attended, and how long they'd been following her.

Although a newcomer to pop music, Griff shows promise as the 2021 Brit Award for Rising Star recipient. With that said, after attending last night's show, I could see that her hype is well deserved.

Angsty Amy Allen opened the show, dressed in Heaven by Marc Jacobs, looking like she was straight out of a Euphoria episode. Amy swung her guitar around, singing masterfully like a post-pandemic rockstar. Her college best friend and accompanist, coincidentally named Griffin, charmed the audience effortlessly with his charisma and musicality. "You're hot," yelled an audience member from the front row as Griffin riffed a chord. "You too," he replied back.

Together Amy and Griffin fired up the audience with their intoxicating chemistry under purple and blue lights, making a great first act before Griff’s entrance.

Throughout the set, Griff’s connection to the audience was effortless. "Alex has been here since 2 PM, everybody. I heard him in line on the street singing my song, and I was like, ‘Hey, that’s my song!” She exclaimed at one point, shouting out the same individual who had called out to the opening performers before.

The lights turned off after the pair wrapped up and finished their act, casting the venue into pitch darkness. The anticipation had everyone on the edge of their seats before an audio narration by Griff began playing through the speakers. The audience quietened as they listened to Griff humbly discuss what inspires her and thank her fans.

Then music started playing as the recording fizzled out before Griff entered the stage. The lights switched on again, glowing yellow and green, as the audience screamed in excitement.

Each song was energetic and fun while maintaining excellent performance skills. Griff’s stage presence endured the entire set, with fluorescent lights assisting her gracefully. People were screaming for an encore the moment she exited the stage.

As someone who’s attended an unhealthy number of concerts, it’s unique seeing someone like Griff so established early on in their career. Griff is a musician made for the people, with relatable lyrics complemented by catchy melodies. Griff is truly one to watch.
