At Judith Hill’s concert at Sony Hall, her incredible musicality and rich, soulful voice pulled me in as I experienced her connection with her audience. It’s safe to say that I was transported to another level by her jazzy vocals, me and the rest of the audience dancing in our seats.
However, my favorite part of the show was seeing Hill’s parents joining her on stage on instrumentals. When I interviewed her backstage after the show, she said that she loves “sharing the [musical] experience with [her] mom and dad since playing together from a young age.” Watching the show, you can feel the connection and love they shared for each other as they jammed on instrumentals.
When Hill took a moment during the show to tell us, “When you face fears, you’re accessing your power,” I put my camera down for a second and took it all in. There’s a certain art to engaging with your audience and connecting on that sort of emotional and spiritual level, and as Hill says, that’s why she loves to do live performances.
