LORING NEW YORK is a luxury womenswear brand established by Parsons MFA alumnus and Chinese fashion designer Long Xu. When asked to describe LORING’s design aesthetic in three words, Xu commented the following: “artistry, handcrafted, upcycled.” With these elements in mind, Xu strives to present a modern interpretation of art while preserving tradition and culture.

The recent Spring/Summer 2023 collection at NYFW displayed their approach to color, geometric shapes and simplicity of materials, inspired by German artist Imi Knoebel. As such, Xu captures a beautifully brilliant collection full of clean lines and asymmetrical cuts that offer a refreshing take on the idea of “simple elevation.” An emerging sector within fashion, the concept of simple elevation revolutionizes minimalist everyday shapes and designs within clothing into something more eye-catching.

The emphasis on fabric textures and calculated color combinations enhances Xu’s vision and perspective. Xu focuses on the colors red, bright blue, black and white within the collection, utilizing the color palette to fuse smoothness and roughness. Key fabrics ranged from charmeuse, silk wool and denim jersey.

With this radical approach of offering new and peculiar shapes, Xu solidifies LORING’s brand identity as one that brings forth a cutting-edge touch to existing bodies of fashion, warping the new with the old.
