As the rain gently danced outside, I stood in the Showbox in Seattle on May 15 for my first concert photography gig, anticipating the thrilling night to begin. Opener pop-punk chloe moriondo kicked off the show with an infectious, lushly euphoric set before mxmtoon set to the stage with her most popular track “Falling For U.” As the song began, the lights morphed between delicate lavender, electric blue, and striking magenta hues. Mxmtoon swayed the stage with an alluring presence as the audience erupted in cheers, singing along to the sleepy nostalgic banger, perfect for the rainy day. The lighting production paired with the lo-fi backing vocals of the opening track set a rather moody tone for the remaining duration of mxmtoon’s set.
Mxmtoon had a captivating personality, continuously interacting and engaging with the audience, further setting an intimate bond and relationship between her audience and her performances. These interactions allowed Mxmtoon to highlight her charming personality and as the night went on, I felt like I knew her on a more emotional level. Cementing her prominent presence in the queer music scene, she spoke about establishing a safe space for her majority queer audience, sharing with us her coming-out experience with her parents.
Throughout the night, mxmtoon presented several unreleased songs from her upcoming “rising” album, coming out on May 20. I am highly anticipating its release and cannot wait to see what is in store for mxmtoon’s future in the indie-pop genre.
