Los Angeles, California (Jan 20, 2021) -- Los Angeles-based musician flora (aka Flynn Namala) released their debut single “Something” on Sunday, February 14th.
“Something” is a sultry, somber, and emo-tinged track that is produced and written by flora themself. flora comes to the world with lyricism that tugs on the feelings of overwhelming nostalgia and needing “something” to ease the pain. While influenced by artists such as Dominic Fike, Clairo, Orion Sun, and Rex Orange County, flora’s sound surely falls into the soundscape of bedroom pop while creating a versatile tone all of their own.
“I had never recorded a song I was truly proud of until this song,” flora says. “I think that’s why it means the most to me. I just had this idea for a song, a plucking pattern, and this melody I liked. I ended up asking my friend if he would produce some drums for me, he eventually told me to just try it myself—so that’s exactly what I did. I basically sat down with myself and tried it out until layers just kept coming. I loved the way all these rough demo tracks sounded, I felt like I FINALLY made something I would listen to.”
ABOUT flora: Flynn Namala, a half-Indian, and half-Austrian non-binary artist is the soul behind the musical project flora. Formerly known from the queer and trans-identifying Los Angeles pop-rock group The Blank Minds, flora has now transcended their own music identity into one that is equal parts indie-DIY and pop. At the age of twenty-one, flora has re-defined what it means to be an artist within the Los Angeles community as they forefront the change for BIPOC, trans, gender non-conforming, and intersex artists—you might be wondering how? Well, in the summer of 2020, flora was awarded a grant for trans students by the City of West Hollywood and Flynn executed their task of creating a project to help aid other queer artists at full-force. They had less than a year to create a festival of their own, and what shortly came after was a full-forced project for the queer youth titled Do-Over Fest. With over 50 artists around the world, Do Over Fest now aids as a virtual playground for queer and trans creatives to promote and access their work. Now, flora is focused on their love for music and their upcoming EP that is set to release sometime in the summer of 2021. While standing as a voice for the queer youth, flora is determined to make space for the underrepresented.
