Dalikamata

by Hannah Casia

For my final in my color theory class, we had the freedom to do whatever we want as long as the color palette was taken from nature (mine was a sunset). I chose to do a self-portrait, as portraits are something I'm more known for. To put a twist on it, I chose to depict myself as the mythological Visayan goddess with a thousand eyes, Dalikamata. Dalikamata is said to be a clairvoyant and the goddess of health, specifically of the eyes, even putting eyes on the wings of butterflies to watch over humans. This piece reflects not only me but a part of the Philippines' culture that not too many know about in comparison to the other myths of the world.
